Summer Flying at Spirit

Spirit’s shortsighted management doesn’t recognize that their failure to provide the minimum days off for pilots runs contrary to the interest of their passengers. Forced overtime can result in fatigued, stressed pilots. We negotiated minimum days off to provide a critical work/life balance for our pilots, and now Spirit is taking pilots below the minimum guarantee we negotiated.

Most Spirit passengers are cost-conscious, hard-working people who are probably familiar with this type of management. Many of us have been required to give up our Saturday to come into the office or miss our kid’s bedtime because our manager made us stay past nine. And you know first-hand the toll that takes.

Spirit pilots will be enduring the challenges of summer flying with an uncertain work/life balance, forced to adjust their summer plans, miss out on family picnics, lose precious time with their kids, and rethink the boasted-about “quality of life” that brought them to Spirit. Everyone needs minimum days off to decompress from a stressful work environment, to relax with family and friends, and to recharge. The pilots who operate your flights need this time off to ensure they are ready to get you where you’re going.

Quality of Life at Spirit

Many pilots choose Spirit for the quality of life, but we’re here to tell you reliable days off are no longer a guarantee. This summer will be no vacation for Spirit pilots.

Management continues to violate pilots’ guaranteed minimum days off, claiming that is allowed under a preposterous interpretation of our Collective Bargaining Agreement. With this interpretation, Spirit pilots could be repeatedly rescheduled and have no days off. The Company’s willingness to take this unprincipled position and knowingly violating the contract regardless of the later consequences sends an ominous message to pilots considering a career here.
